MCGRATH'S GREAT GRAPHS

by Dr. Bart DiLiddo Tuesday, 06/01/2010
The first thing that struck me about V V 7 graphs was the use of Candlesticks. I love Candlesticks. They tell me so much more than Standard dotted line graphs. Yes, I could have easily used the OHLC setup in V V 6, but how could vertical, black lines compare to the glamour of red and green Candlesticks against a black background? And V V 7 graphs are always easy for me to read...I have my default graph setting on "Best Fit."

Best Fit is a unique V V 7 feature that is designed to always give you a highly readable, great looking graph. It determines the size of the graph and number of Candlesticks on the graph from the size of your computer screen. It doesn't make any difference what the Frequency is, Intraday, End Of Day, End Of Week or Weekly, you select the Frequency, click on Best Fit and you get a beautiful, readable graph. Hold on a minute. What is the difference between the End Of Week and Weekly graphs?

Well, the End Of Week graph is what you currently get in V V 6. It's called "Weekly" in that platform, but its bars show the OHLC data for the last trading day of each week as compared to the Weekly graph in V V 7 which shows the OHLC data for the entire week as a single bar. V V 7 reveals huge differences in appearance when these graphs are compared, even for the same graph. Fantastic.

So what do you see on these beautiful, readable graphs? V V 7 has four pre-set Graph Layouts you can choose from. The default Layout will produce a Best Fit, End Of Day graph showing daily Candlesticks of Price, a 40-Day MA of Price, RT and daily Volume. I like this because I can now look at RT and Volume at the same time. But my favorite graph layout is based upon the Enhanced ProTrader Market Timing Graph, aka, the EPMTG. Amazingly, it is one of the default graph selections. Try it, you'll like it.

Wait a minute. Do you mean to say that ProTrader graphics come standard with V V 7? Yes they do, my friend, and I use the MACD/DPO combination on just about every graph I look at. Let me ask you again. Even if I am not using ProTrader now, I get to use it free in V V 7? Let me be clear. You get the ProTrader Graphs free and, if you haven't caught on by now, the Standard Graphs and ProTrader Graphs have been integrated into only one class of graphs in V V 7. You would not, however, get the ProTrader Searches free unless you have already purchased ProTrader.

If you would like to learn about the full range of capabilities and features of V V 7 graphics, visit the VectorVest University, click on RealTime and select Graphs. You will receive an excellent presentation from Ms. Angel Clark which is crisp, clear, precise and enjoyable.

V V 7 also provides a MultiView Tool which displays up to four graphs in quadrants within one window for quick comparison against each other. The MultiView Tool can graph a stock in 1 minute, 5 minute, 1 day and 1 week bars all inside one window. It can also graph a stock next to its Industry or Sector and even the Market Timing Graph.

Finally, V V 7 introduces MiniGraphs, which can be added to your customizable Home Page and Dashboard. The VectorVest Home section will be prefilled with five MiniGraphs showing the VVC Price, VVC RT, MTI, Advance/Decline and BSR. You can add more MiniGraphs to follow specific indexes, stocks, industry groups, business sectors or portfolio equity curves. MiniGraphs have a very intuitive Cursor Tool that allows you to hover the mouse over the MiniGraph to see the value at any specific point in time. The Change and % Change of the MiniGraph are shown in a Watermark behind the graph and will update with the graph throughout the day. You will also find the MiniGraph in other areas of V V 7 such as Portfolios, Derby and BackTester.

I really love these graphs and I'm very proud of them. They were all created by Tim McGrath, one of our bright, young developers. I think of them as McGrath's Great Graphs.

THE KILLER CROSSOVER.
Five years ago, 06/17/05, I wrote an essay called, "Bottom Fishing Using Moving Average Crossovers." I thought it was a pretty good essay, but in this business your customers are always asking for something better. They especially wanted to be able to conduct crossover searches with technical indicators. So we finally gained this capability in V V 7 RealTime last year. I described such a search on October 16, 2009. Now the question has become, "Is that the best you can do?" Mr. Jerry D'Ambrosio, one of our best Instructors, has been working on this question and he has some extremely interesting answers to share with you. Please join Jerry at the VectorVest University to see this week's blockbuster "Strategy of the Week" presentation, "The Killer Crossover."
