For two decades, I’ve championed the cause of individual investors just like you. Because I know what it’s like to walk in your shoes.
When I first got interested in stocks back in the early 1960s, I muddled along on a roller coaster of wins and losses until the oil embargo of the 1970s triggered a recession and severe bear market.
Trying to save what I could, I sold all my stocks... at what turned out to be the very bottom. Then watched all my “loser” stocks promptly go up!

In studying the market, I found there are three things you must know about a given stock to be successful:
- You have to know what a stock is really worth.
- You need to know if a stock is safe to buy.
- Finally, you need to know the stock’s timing—if it’s the right time to buy, hold or sell.
So I spent long hours applying my skills as an engineer and mathematician... developing formulas to answer these three questions.
Before long, I had three working formulas—one for each question above—and my my stock-picking success rate improved tremendously. As I continued to refine them, my results continued to improve. Enough that by the early 1980s, my portfolio was producing truly outstanding results.
Three Rules for Picking Winners and Avoiding Losers
Always pick stocks that are undervalued.
The first rule of stock picking is to favor companies making money. And not just a little—you want to target companies making money hand over fist.
These stocks are often undervalued, offering you a higher chance of achieving gains, a bigger potential for very large gains, and lower—often much lower—downside risk.
Investors typically use a stock’s P/E ratio to determine its value. But to learn a stock’s true value, you must account for all three of the major forces that drive the market: interest, inflation and earnings.
So when I created VectorVest’s formula for Value, I made certain to factor in interest, inflation, earnings and earnings growth rates.
To my knowledge, no other valuation formula does this, making VectorVest truly unique. VectorVest’s Value formula is the only one to give you the complete picture, so you always know if a stock is undervalued, overvalued, or trading at its true value.
Favor SAFE stocks with consistently rising earnings.
In addition to value, you also need to know if a stock is safe to buy. So you need to know its financial track record.
Has the company produced consistent, predictable earnings quarter after quarter, year after year? Or has its financial performance been erratic and unpredictable?
Shareholders with little confidence in their company tend to overreact to rumors and bad news. Consequently, the stock prices of companies with erratic earnings performance suffer more when unfortunate things happen.
However, stocks of companies with steady, predictable earnings can weather nearly any storm.
To know if a stock is SAFE, you need to determine the company’s financial stability... its price volatility... and especially how consistently and predictably it’s growing its earnings.

On the other hand, stocks with rising prices offer several advantages—not the least of which is they’re already doing what you want them to do.
A stock hitting new highs has essentially zero overhead resistance because there are no unhappy buyers waiting to get their money back. And the best time to buy a stock is after it’s gone down and started to climb. Especially if you catch it right after it’s bottomed.
The true secret to buying low and selling high—and making your fortune in the stock market—is to buy a stock once it’s already bottomed and just beginning its climb... hopefully to new highs!
