The VectorVest homepage is designed to read like the front page of your daily newspaper. However, the headline story is always the same: Market Timing.

How Does the VectorVest Homepage Help You Time the Market?

With a combination of graphs, training aids, gauges and strategies, the homepage of VectorVest 7 gives you insights into what the market is doing as a whole as well as how individual stocks, business sectors and industries are performing. And you can customize it to fit your portfolio, too. With the default homepage, you get a great deal of information to help you time the market.

The Default Homepage

Click on this image or any in this post to see an enlarged version. Click on your browser’s back button to come back to this post.

First, let’s look at the Market TIming Gauge. The Market Timing Gauge looks similar to a gauge you would find on the dashboard of your automobile. It’s divided into thirds: red on the left, yellow in the middle, and green on the right. These colors match those of the Color Guard where red indicates a Do Not Buy signal, yellow indicates a Proceed With Caution or Neutral signal, and green indicates a Buy signal. The needle will tell you where the market is, according to the VectorVest plan you have. For instance, if you have the End of Day plan, you’ll get signals from Market Close of the previous day; If you’re on the Intraday plan, you’ll get data that is delayed by 15 minutes; if you’re on the RealTime plan, you’ll get streaming data. The Market Timing Gauge will give precise instructions on what VectorVest recommends doing at that time. For instance, at the time of this post (Monday, June 10, 2013), the Color Guard is Mildly Bearish (right between the yellow and red fields), therefore VectorVest does not advocate buying stocks at this time.

Another important market timing indicator is the MTI Mini-Graph. MTI stands for Market Timing Indicator. The MTI Mini-Graph shows you, especially if you’re a visual person, how the market is trending. If the market is trending downward, you should stay out of the market if you’re a prudent or cautious investor. If you’re an aggressive investor, you should be selling short on your trades. Wait for a clear upward trend before buying long. Don’t worry, VectorVest doesn’t leave the timing to guesswork on your part. VectorVest gives clear buy, hold and sell recommendations.

The VectorVest at a Glance graph shows the Buys, Holds and Sells of every stock VectorVest is tracking. (7,949 stocks at this time.) The Buy, Sell and Hold recommendations are based on the VVC (VectorVest Composite Index). The VVC is a mathematical formula the VectorVest system uses to evaluate stocks. You can find the actual formula here.

The Color Guard tracks Price; RT (Relative Timing); BSR (Buy to Sell Ratio); MTI; Trends and Calls with the red, yellow and green color indicators. You get clear Confirmed Ups and Downs to help you time the market. These directly correlate to the Market Timing Gauge. However, by seeing how Price, RT, and BSR are trending daily, you get a clearer picture of how the market is doing and why the market is trending the way it is. You won’t worry about a blip here and there. You’ll see when markets start to turn (either up or down) and you’ll also see when it’s time to sit back and enjoy the ride!

Going back to the newspaper analogy, your home page can also contain a News feed. Provided by Yahoo! Finance (the default, although you can choose Reuters or Financial Times if you would rather, by following this path: Tools>Application Settings>General>News Sources>Preferred News Source), these clickable news links can give you additional insight into what is happening in the market and what factors may be affecting it.

Just as newspapers have listings for events happening in your area, VectorVest has a listing of upcoming VectorVest Events that might interest you. The date, event, and location are provided. These are clickable links and take you to the corresponding page on our website where you can find out more information and sign-up, too.

Newspapers have ads. Lots of them! If you so choose, you can populate your home page with Special Offers from VectorVest. (Don’t worry, it’s only one panel and won’t take up half the page or more like some newspaper ads!) These are great deals that we offer from time to time to help you better understand the VectorVest system and get more out of your software.

We also offer a Training tab that is a link to the VectorVest University training videos. These training aids will help you get up to speed quickly with the VectorVest software. VectorVest, while easy to use, is very powerful. If you want to fully understand the functionality, you will love these easy to follow along training sessions. Along those same lines, VectorVest has the Strategy video. Updated daily, this video gives you a rundown on the market and how VectorVest recommends playing it. You are offered a choice of whether to watch the video or read the text. If you have a slower computer, bad connection or you’re short on time, the text option can come in quite handy.

The default homepage offers a few other goodies, too. For example, the Top VST Stocks (the top stocks that meet the criteria of the VectorVest Composite). VectorVest also offers industry and sector specific tabs: e.g., the Top RT Industries and the Top RT Sectors. There is also a QuickList, which compares the major indices (Dow Jones, NASDAQ, S&P 500 and 100) to the VectorVest Composite.

Customized tabs

There are other features you may wish to add to your homepage, too. For example, you may want to see market Advances and Declines. to add a tab, click on the wrench in the home tab at the top of the page, then click on any of the icons that appear in the drop down ribbon. The new tab will now appear in your homepage. You may need to scroll down to see it. You can rearrange your home page by dragging tabs by their title bars.

You can track individual stocks of your choosing with mini-graphs, too. Simply click on the wrench icon on the Home tab, locate a mini-graph from the drop-down ribbon and click on the icon to add to the home page. Next, click on the wrench icon of the mini-graph you just added to show its options. There should be a white field in the center. Click on this and type the stock symbol. If you don’t know the stock symbol, type in the name of the company and VectorVest will find it for you! Now you can see whether or not your stock is trending up, down or sideways. You can set for different time periods, too. For instance, you can see how your stock performed that day, for that week, for the month, for three months or for for three years! In short, you can tell VectorVest what time period you want to observe and it populates the graph for you.

As you can see, the VectorVest homepage can be as complete or as customized as you want it to be. Is there a tab that you don’t want any more? Click on the X in the toolbar and poof! It’s gone! Want it back or want to add something in its place? Click on the wrench in the Home tab, find what you are looking for in the pull down, then click to add to your home page. It’s that simple and easy! Want the default home page back? Click on Tools at the top of the page, then follow this path: Tools>Application Settings>General>Data Tools>Restore Homepage Layout. Now go and customize your home page the way it works best for you!

The key to making money in the market lies in mastering the fine art of buying low and selling high. Learn how VectorVest can help by reading this post.

Want to know the absolute best way to make money in stocks? (Or shares, for our friends across the pond and down under.) The key to making money in the market lies in mastering the fine art of buying low and selling high. Yep. That’s it in a nutshell! However, as anyone who has ever traded in the market knows, it’s a lot easier said than done. That is, unless you use VectorVest!

How does one know when a stock’s price is low?

For those in the US, have you ever watched the squawking heads go on and on about buying stocks as they are going down in price? One personality in particular screams that so-and-so stock is going down in price so now is the time to jump in and buy! The problem with that strategy, if that is what you want to call it, is that you could be buying a stock at the beginning of its downward trend. As Newton’s First Law of Motion states, “an object in motion remains in motion unless acted upon by an outside force.” In other words, if a stock is going down, what’s to keep it from going down? Do you really want to hang on to a stock through what could amount to months and months of bad times just to finally feel vindicated months–or perhaps years–later?

So, when is the time to buy a stock at a low price? You wait until it has stopped going down and started going up. Plain and simple. And you don’t do it right away. You make sure the stock is well on its way up and then you jump on and enjoy the ride.

In order to do this properly, you need to know some fundamentals regarding the stock. You want to know its Relative Value (RV) and Relative Safety (RS). Fundamental investors–those who practice a buy and hold strategy–buy when they see attractive situations.

The value of a stock will rise when

earnings go up

inflation goes down

and interest rates go down

Safety improves with

outstanding financial performance

consistent, predictable earnings growth

above average earnings growth

steady increases in stock price

low debt/equity ratio

high sales volume

Technical Investors–who are short-term traders–time their purchases to when they see evidence of rising prices.

Key indicators of rising prices

price breakouts

upward trending MAs (Moving Averages)

new highs on increasing volume

a rising market

Important: Market Direction is the single most important factor affecting a stock’s price movement! And the VectorVest Market Timing Graph clearly shows when the market is Rising, Falling, or even Transitioning. The MTI (Market Timing Indicator) graph gives explicit C/Up (Confirmed Up) and C/Dn (Confirmed Down) signals. Furthermore, the Color Guard tells you when it’s OK to buy stocks.

BAC (Bank of America) came from our Blue Chip Bargains–High AvgVol Bottom Fishing Strategy.
Look at that upward trend!

VectorVest also supplies you with strategies you can use for catching stocks on the rise. Under the Unisearch tab, you’ll find a folder called Bottom Fishing searches. Bottom-Fishing is the essence of buying low and selling high! Essentially, these are beaten up, under-valued stocks that have hit bottom and are now recovering. Bottom-fishing strategies work very well after a lengthy downturn.

You don’t need to just wait for downturns to correct themselves, though. Once a rally has continued for 4-6 weeks, it’s fine to begin using momentum searches, e.g., Explosive EPS Stocks II; High VST Newcomers; or Best Stocks Under $20. By switching to stocks in these strategic groups, you can hedge your portfolio to current market trends and continue to make profits (and cut losses).

When do you sell a stock?

Unless you’re a stubborn buy and hold investor, you don’t want to hold on to a stock forever. VectorVest gives clear, unmistakable recommendations on when to sell. You want to sell a stock after it begins to trend downward. The software will tell you if it is time to sell so you don’t exit too early or too late, thus protecting your portfolio from having one or two stocks that take away all the gains from your winning picks.

If you follow along with the Strategies of the Week, each Friday at market close you will get recommendations on what strategies are trending most effectively. If there are any losers in your portfolio, you can replace them with our recommended stocks and cut your losses significantly.

Can VectorVest “predict” absolute troughs and peaks? No. Investing is like the weather in that sense. You can mathematically predict trends, but you cannot foresee the future. So, with VectorVest, you don’t get in the instant that stocks begin their magical rise. Nor do you exit the second they begin to plummet. However, you do get in when they are trending upwards and you do get out when market indicators are negative and the stock is trending downwards. You have assured yourself of a healthy profit, or if you get in at the wrong time, not so much of a loss. By trading this way, you are stair-stepping your way to success!

Want to see our recommended picks and Strategy of the Week? Then start a risk-free, 5-week trial of VectorVest! Put the software through its paces for 5 weeks. Check the strategies and recommendations. Once you see how easy it is to make money on your investments, you’ll wonder why it took you so long to subscribe!

As a savvy investor, there are three things you should know about stocks:

What a stock is really worth

How safe is the stock

When to Buy, Sell or Hold the stock

How To Determine What a Stock Is Really Worth

Stock analysts have many ways to determine the value of a stock. Naturally, the most common way is by price. However, just because a stock is priced high—or conversely, priced low—doesn’t mean the stock is worth the price. A high priced stock could be trending downward, meaning the price you pay now would stick you with a stock that is losing value. A low priced stock could be trending upward, which would be a great deal! Obviously, price alone is a poor indicator of value.

Another common indicator of stock value is the P/E, or price-to-earnings ratio. By determining what the company in question is actually earning in comparison to the asking price of the stock, the P/E ratio is a far superior indicator of a stock’s true value. Other sophisticated ranking systems include stocks ranked by earnings growth and stocks ranked by G/PE. Now you are starting to get a clearer picture of what is really happening with the company. Are they making money? Do they have costs under control? These are fundamental questions that need to be answered. However, VectorVest offers an even more complex equation for determining stock value:

V=100 x (E/(IY+YP))
x Sqr [((R+G)/2)/((IY+YP)+F)]

where

E = Earnings in $ / share
IY = Interest Rate in %
YP = Yield Premium
R = % Return on Total Capital
G = Earnings Growth in % / yr.
F = Inflation Rate in % / yr.

In case you’re not a math whiz, or haven’t any inclination to compute all these variables, the VectorVest software does it for you. By factoring in all these variables, you get a very sophisticated picture of what a company is really worth.

How to Determine the Safety of a Stock

The VectorVest software program uses Relative Safety, or RS, as an indicator of risk. Consistency and Predictability of Financial Performance are the primary factors in assessing Relative Safety.

Another determining factor is Relative Value, or RV. RV is an indicator of long-term price appreciation potential. Price, Value, Earnings Growth, AAA Corporate Bond Rates and Risk are used to compute Relative Value.

Finally, Relative Timing, or RT, should be factored into the equation. RT is an indicator of short-term trends. The Direction, Magnitude and Dynamics of Price History are used to determine Relative Timing.

The VectorVest application has a master indicator known as VST-Vector (Value, Safety, Timing). VST-Vector combines RV, RS and RT into a single comprehensive indicator. With all these indicators factored into each stock, you are assured of making safer stock picks on a consistent basis.

How to Determine When to Buy, Hold, and Sell Stocks

The VST-Vector, as stated previously, uses RS, RV and RT when determining stock value and safety. These indicators factor when to buy, hold and sell as well. One more indicator, the Stop Price, also comes into play. An adjusted 13-week Moving Average of Closing Prices is used to compute Stop Prices. Essentially, when a stock begins to lose value, you need an exit strategy. No need to lose all your gains! With VectorVest, all factors are considered in making a buy, sell or hold recommendation.

Every day, each of the stocks in the VectorVest Trading System (over 8,300 stocks!) is analyzed by the VST (Value, Safety, and Timing) formulas. Then each stock is scored using an easy-to-understand 0.00-2.00 rating system. Ratings above 1.00 are favorable and ratings below 1.00 are unfavorable. How simple is that?

The VectorVest Buy, Sell or Hold Criteria

Buy

Price > Stop Price

VST > 1

RT > 1

Price must be diverging away from Stop Price

Sell

Price < Stop Price

Hold

Price > Stop, but any of the other three factors needed to receive a Buy are not met.

VectorVest Helps You Pick Winners Consistently

You can see that a lot goes into making sound decisions for purchasing stocks. VectorVest, while an extremely powerful program, takes the guesswork out of choosing stocks and market timing and helps you to pick winners consistently and easily.

Of all the reasons to invest, one of the most important is to ensure you have enough money to live on when you are retired. However, most retirees don’t have enough money to get by. CNBC reports nearly half of retirees will actually run out of money.

Fortunately, it is easy to adapt my proven rules for Value, Safety and Timing into a simple, 3-step plan to ensure your retirement.

Retirement Step One:
Use a Stock Picking System that Works

Granted, this one should be a given. Yet, the first step to ensuring your “golden retirement” is to make sure that you use a trading system that really does work!

And you’re not going to find a better stock-picking system than VectorVest.

Why? With over 25 years of proven performance, VectorVest eliminates guesswork and emotion when you pick your stocks. OK, you will get an emotional rush when you see your nest egg growing, especially when it’s contrary to the rest of the market!

You may be surprised how easily and quickly that happens, too. When you make informed, logical decisions, it’s easy to zero in on the safest and best retirement stocks for capital appreciation and income.

VectorVest Helps You Find Stocks that Are Perfect for Growing your Nest Egg

In addition to our powerful analysis indicators, market timing and stock scans, VectorVest gives clear buy and sell recommendations on every stock, every day. Easily identify great dividend payers like Cedar Fair and know when to buy and sell for consistent capital appreciation and dividend income. (Click on graph to enlarge)

Example: VectorVest helps you pick stocks like Cedar Fair, LLP (FUN), one of the largest regional amusement-resort operators in the world, and which also happens to pay a nice dividend of $2.50%. One of the popular Retirement Strategies–Don’s Dividend Dandies–found this stock which has sky-rocketed in value since June 2012.

Retirement Step Two:
Use a Trading System and Strategy that Picks the BEST Stocks for Capital Appreciation and Income

Once again, VectorVest can help–with top performing retirement strategies like Don’s Dividend Dandies. This strategy selects stocks with growing dividends from companies that can best afford them.

These are the stocks to buy for consistent income and outstanding capital appreciation at the same time. Want proof? You got it:

Over the past 10 years, Don’s Dividend Dandies returned an impressive 183%–through one of the worst recessions we’ve ever had!

Retirement Step Three:
Only Use a Proven Market Timing System

This step is the most important of all: always–and only–use a proven market timing system.

You know, the one that gets you in at the beginning of a rally. And better yet, gets you out before your portfolio gets obliterated as the market sells off.

We’re talking about a system like VectorVest. A system that shows you what to buy, when to buy and when to sell. And it shares with you the full history of all its timing calls. Which allows you to review and verify its performance for yourself.

Don’t Invest and Hope for the Best–
Invest with Confidence Using the Proven VST System

No need to leave your retirement to chance. Build a retirement fund that allows you to live the way you want, anywhere you want. Utilizing the proven track record of the VST (Value, Safety and Timing) System, VectorVest can help you find valuable, safe stocks and time when to get in and out to protect and grow your nest egg funds. It’s easy and it’s time… time for you to have the retirement you have always dreamed of. Start today with a 5-week trial of VectorVest–for only $9.95!

Here is an article by Dr. Bart DiLiddo excerpted from this week's VectorVest overview. Learn how VectorVest can help you make informed decisions on when to buy–and sell!–gold and gold stocks.

So many prognosticators are telling people to buy gold and gold stocks now. However, gold is in a down trend. In other words, prices are continuing to fall. Why buy now when prices are trending downwards with no correction in sight? Here is an article by Dr. Bart DiLiddo excerpted from this week’s VectorVest overview. Learn how VectorVest can help you make informed decisions on when to buy–and sell!–gold and gold stocks.

Why I Love the Midas Touch

The Gold Bugs Index, HUI, hit an all-time, intraday high of $638.6 on 9/9/2011. It pulled back to an intraday low of $372.7 on 5/16/12; then rallied to a recent high of $529.8 on 9/21/12. It has been falling ever since, and closed yesterday at $264.3.

During this time an incessant barrage of TV ads exhorted viewers to buy gold. As I watched these ads, I wished there was a way I could tell unwitting viewers not to buy gold or gold related stocks while they were falling in price. Ironically, the recent catastrophic drop in gold prices unleashed a flood of emails to my box telling me what to do about gold and gold stocks.

On Tuesday, I received an email from Mr. Alexander Green, Chief Investment Strategist of The Oxford Club, entitled, Forget the Gold Bulls…and the Gold Bears. It said, “Gold bulls are now proclaiming that this ‘correction’ represents an excellent new entry point before the next big rally. Gold bears, on the other hand, claim this is only the beginning of a more serious pullback. Who should you believe? Neither. No investment is more misunderstood than gold. And the prognosticators are often just as confused as their followers.”

Mr. Green also said, “Unlike stocks, you can’t value gold on sales, earnings, cash flow or price-to-book value. Unlike bonds, you can’t judge it on credit history, coupons or yields-to-maturity. Unlike real estate, you can’t value it on rental income or tax benefits. In short, gold is the ultimate speculative asset class.” It’s OK to buy some gold, but stocks do better over the long-term.

On Wednesday, I got an email from Mr. Matt Badialli, editor, S&A Resource Report. It was headlined, What I’m Telling My Readers To Do With Gold and Silver Stocks. Here’s the lead in: “Get out. Don’t wait for it to get better. Don’t try to pick the bottom. Don’t look for cheap stocks. Just get to the sidelines… because it could get worse.”

This sounded like good advice to me, but he was four months late making the call. This is not to say Mr. Badialli is not a good commodities analyst, because he is. In fact, he’s an excellent analyst. He just hasn’t got the benefit of using VectorVest’s Midas Touch, a timing system for when to buy and sell gold stocks.

On Thursday, I received an email from Mr. Nathan Slaughter, a Leading Expert from the Street Authority Daily. Its headline said, Gold Is Plunging–Here’s My Next Move. Mr. Slaughter’s observation was that gold’s historic collapse this week could actually be good news for commodity investors. He wasn’t about to tell you to enter into the gold market now because he thinks we haven’t seen the last of this gold selloff. But there is a silver lining.

“Indiscriminate selloffs like this week’s create truly exceptional buying opportunities. Along with gold’s fall, other commodity groups have been hammered despite solid (and in many cases improving) fundamentals. Platinum, aluminum, oil, grains and other resources have been unfairly punished and could snap back sharply once the panic subsides.” So he’s keeping some cash on the sidelines while he searches for the best entry point.

This morning, I spotted an item on Yahoo!Finance called, 12 (Misguided) Commandments of Gold Bugs: by Barry Ritholtz. It has an interesting video and article that are also informative, but it’s not going to tell you when to buy and sell gold stocks. I can get this information anytime I want from VectorVest. That’s why I love the Midas Touch.

VectorVest prides itself in guiding investors on when to buy, what to buy and when to sell stocks. We believe in buying rising stocks in rising markets. The Color Guard is prominently displayed on the Home Page and is designed to provide fast, visual information on market direction. When I buy a stock, I want to see it close the day with a gain. So I want to be absolutely certain that both the market and the stock are rising at the very instant I hit the Buy button.

This is easy to do with VectorVest 7 RealTime. First, I check the Color Guard. It is updated every five seconds, so it’s easy to see if it is Bullish, Bearish or Neutral. (The specific conditions for these terms are defined in Section E. of the Color Guard Special Report, located under the Views tab.) Next, I check the 1-Day, 1 minute, Intraday set-up of the Market Timing graph. If it’s rising from yesterday’s close, I’m looking to buy, but not before I turn to my secret weapon: the RealTime Derby.

The VectorVest RealTime Derby is a phenomenal market timing tool. It can signal changes in market direction better than anything I’ve ever seen. It can even give early warning signals on reversal days. The last thing I want to do is to buy long on a big opening rally; then see the market turn against me by the end of the day. For years, we have advised our subscribers to wait until 30 minutes after the market opens before buying any stocks. This lessens your chances of getting whip-sawed, but it’s not as good as using the Derby.

The ability of the Derby to detect imminent reversals has been cited in a number of my essays and most recently in my essay of June 8, 2012 called, “Anatomy of a Reversal.” This phenomenon, as well as several other market timing techniques, is described on page 20 of the RealTime Derby Special Report. If a reversal is not indicated by the Derby, I’ll check the trend of the stock I plan to buy.

I do this basically by looking at both long and short-term graphs. I like to buy stocks with smooth, rising price patterns and steadily rising forecasted earnings. I always look at CI because I want to see it going up. Finally, I’ll right click on the stock and click on “View Full Stock Analysis.” Bingo, I’m presented with two graphs: the stock graph to my left and the Industry Group to my right. I always want to make sure the Industry Group is rising as well as the stock and the market.

It’s like the old proverb: “If you give a man a fish you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish you feed him for a lifetime.” We want you to make money for a lifetime. Learn How to Buy Stocks.
